Starting a backtest
Choose New backtest and follow three steps. Market: pick up to four markets that replay on one clock — forex, index CFDs, metals and energy, US stocks and ETFs, crypto and futures. Period: draw a random date (a weekday at 02:00 New York, before London opens) or choose one, how long the session runs, and which charts open (15m + 1h, 1m + 15m, 5m + 1h + 4h…). Account: a name, a starting balance, free practice or prop-challenge rules, and your own trading rules. Costs and fills — spread, commission per side or per round trip, slippage, what happens when a stop and a target share a candle, and leverage — are preset for each market and can be changed. Save the whole form as a template to start the next session from it. Quick start opens a ready-made session in one click, and Moments opens a famous stretch of history — the franc floor, Brexit night, the COVID crash, the SVB weekend, Liberation Day — a little before it happened.
Start a backtestMarket data
Forex, metals, energy, index CFDs, US stocks and ETFs replay from Dukascopy's 1-minute history — since 2010 for most currency pairs and gold, 2012 for the indices and oil, 2017 for stocks (split-adjusted). Crypto replays from Binance since 2018. Futures replay from Yahoo, which keeps 1-minute bars only for recent weeks; older futures dates step hour by hour, so the index CFDs (US100, US500, US30) are the better choice for deep intraday history. Each market in the New backtest flow says how far back its minute data goes.
The replay
A session opens full screen. The top bar shows the selected market's price, which trading session the replay clock is in (Asia, London, New York, the overlap or the weekend) and the next high-impact economic release for that market. Press Play (or Space) and the market unfolds; speed is in chart candles a second, from a quarter to fifty, and playback is smooth (each candle builds tick by tick, as it would live) or a whole candle at a time — both in the speed menu, which also sets the replay to pause by itself when an order fills, when a position closes, or at each session open. Next candle (→) reveals one chart candle, Tick (Shift+→) one source bar, and Previous candle (←) steps back — the clock, your positions and the charts all return, as far back as the last closed trade. Jump plays through to the next hour, the next day open, the next Asia, London or New York open, the next Silver Bullet window or five minutes before the next big release; it also plays until an order fills or a position closes (Alt+U) or until a price level is reached. Click the replay clock to go to a date — in New York time, like the clock — or click the session timeline above the controls. New replay charts read New York time too. No chart ever shows a price that has not happened yet: a candle still forming is built only from the bars already revealed. Turn on the chart's Sessions overlay to shade the Asia, London and New York killzones.
Placing trades
The Buy and Sell buttons in the replay dock trade at market with your size and the bracket shown beside them — by default a stop at one and a half times the chart's recent range and a 2R target. Each market keeps its own ticket. The Bracket button offers presets (Scalp, Intraday, Swing, Runner) and keeps your own. Size is a share of your balance, a dollar risk or a fixed size. Risk-based sizes count commission both ways and slippage, so being stopped out loses about the risk shown; when a stop is too wide for the risk you chose, the order goes in at the smallest size and tells you what it really risks. The Trade panel adds limit and stop orders, and under More options a trailing stop, up to five partial take profits, an automatic move to breakeven, and a playbook, tags and a note recorded with the trade. Right-click the chart to place a limit or stop at a price, drag any stop, target or order line to move it, or click a stop or target in the positions table to type a new one. Market orders wait while a market is closed; a Skip to the open button takes you there.
Managing positions
The positions drawer under the charts lists open positions with their live P&L and R, working orders, your history, and an activity log of every fill, close, pause and rule. It opens by itself with your first position, and clicking the account figures in the top bar shows or hides it. Close a position, close half, or move its stop to breakeven in one click; Close all (Shift+X) flattens everything. Equity, open P&L, today's result and return sit in the top bar — the eye button hides them if you would rather not watch the money. With leverage set, free margin shows in the Session panel and an order that needs more margin than is free is refused.
Your own rules
Beyond a prop challenge, a session can carry the rules you want to practise: every trade needs a stop, a minimum reward-to-risk, at most so many trades a day, stop trading after a daily loss, and pause after a run of losses. An order that breaks one is refused with the reason; a run of losses pauses the replay with a note to take a breath. Set them when starting a session or in the Session panel at any time.
Journal and statistics
Every closed trade lands in the Journal panel, where you can add notes, a playbook and tick its checklist, a rating, how it felt, mistakes, tags and chart screenshots, and jump the chart back to the trade. The Stats panel updates as trades close. The full report has four parts: Performance (net P&L, win rate, profit factor, drawdown, R, holding times, streaks, the equity curve, the R distribution, the edge profile, the rolling edge, breakdowns by session, weekday, hour, month, side, playbook, tag, exit and market, the time-of-day heat map, the calendar and the monthly table, trade frequency and what your mistakes cost), Trades (planned against realised brackets, where a tighter stop would have helped, results by holding time, best and worst trades), Drawdown (every drawdown period, time to recover and the heat winners took), and Simulation (Monte Carlo reshuffles, and what a different target or a tighter stop would have made). Filter the report by market, side, playbook, tag, mistake or exit, export the trades, or ask Intelligence for a review of the session. Analytics combines the sessions you pick. The Backtesting page shows the practice you have put in — time spent, history replayed, trades and net result, and a fifteen-week practice calendar with your day streak.
Open AnalyticsProp challenges
Choose Prop challenge in the Account step for a profit target with a daily-loss limit and a maximum or trailing drawdown, using a common preset — two-step, one-step, futures-style trailing, instant funding — or your own numbers. Limits are checked against the worst price inside every candle, not just its close. The Session panel shows each limit as a meter; breaking one fails the challenge and locks the session, and reaching the target (with the minimum trading days) passes it.
Keyboard shortcuts
Space or Alt+1 play and pause · → or Ctrl+Space next candle · ← or Ctrl+Alt+R previous candle · Shift+→ one source bar · Alt+U run to the next event · Alt+2 and Alt+3 slower and faster · Alt+4 and Alt+5 smooth or whole-candle playback · B and S buy and sell at market · Shift+Y next day · Shift+Z next session · Shift+I, L and N the Asia, London and New York opens · Shift+V the next Silver Bullet window · Alt+G go to a date · Alt+Q buy and Alt+Shift+Q sell at market · Alt+M, Alt+B and Alt+N switch the ticket to market, limit and stop · Shift+X close everything · Alt+K lists them all in the terminal.
Separate from your journal
Backtest trades never appear in your trading journal, accounts or live statistics; they have their own journal, reports and analytics. Sessions save as you go, so you can close the tab and continue later from the Backtests page.
